Neuroimmune response is the result of a delicate balance between the production of inflammatory mediators by immune cells and the ability of neurons to sense them through the expression of specific receptors.
Emerging evidence indicates that cytokines modulate brain excitability, and various mechanisms have been identified to the convergence between cytokines and the glutamatergic system.

The dynamical and functional interaction between neuronal IL-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) and the NMDA receptor (NMDAR) complex will be discussed.
